Can DXL update an OLE link?

Hi, I use DXL rarely and I might have overlooked something.

In our department we use extensively DOORS with OLE embedded objects.

From the DOORS UI  (9.6.1.10)  There is a pup-up window (from a specific object, then text, then OLE Object Properties) called "Linked Document Properties" which contains a button "Update Now".

Is that possible to execute the same functionality in a DXL macro ?

We would badly need this, but I could not find any obvious DXL OLE command which achieves that.

Any suggestion ?

thanks,

Michele

I am pretty sure this is not possible. The dialog you are referring to is not implemented in DXL but part an integral part of the DOORS client. So you can open it, but you cannot automate the pressing of the update button easily with DXL.

But you might be able to get the filename of the linked file from the RTF and reinsert the OLE object (but that will not be pretty).

You might also want to rethink your approach. Linked OLE Objects (beside the possibility of being out of date) will completely destroy your ability for baselining a module. Also OLE in DOORS did not proof very stable in the past (trying to handle it from DXL you will get hangs, crashes, etc). So if you have many references to external files inside your DOORS modules, you might be better off, using other references, like external links, etc. You also might want to think about storing those files version safe, so that you will be able to baseline your modules. So a file system is not the best place here, maybe you can find (or create a system) which will store the files version safe and provide the preview information for you, that you can reference from DOORS (and maybe show inside a DXL Attribute).

I know this might not have been the answer you have been looking for - sorry for that - but I really think creating a DXL script that tries to update your OLE references will bring you very close to the house of horror in DXL ;-)

Maybe this helps, regards, Mathias
